Five walleye weighing in a combined 45 pounds is what it took to garner top honors in Saturday’s tour opener for the Lake Erie Walleye Trail held at Coastal Marine II. The top two teams managed that feat with three fish topping ten pounds each. This was the first event of the season for members of the Western Basin Sportfishing Association and tournaments in Sandusky, Vermilion and Lorain are scheduled to follow. Port Clinton Mayor Tom Brown, an avid fisherman when he can find time, greeted the finishing teams along with local celebrity Wylie Walleye and presented a proclamation to tournament officials. Wylie is the featured guest each New Year’s Eve for Port Clinton’s famous Walleye Drop. Mayor Brown told us, “I’ve caught more than a few walleye in my day but these guys really know their stuff. To consistently reel in nine and ten pounders is really something and just goes to show why Port Clinton is known as the sportfishing capital of the world”. The tournament was held at Coastal Marine II with a predawn launch and the weigh-in ceremony at 3 o’clock in the afternoon. Evinrude Sales Representative Craig Klinect partnered with locals Ronnie Rhodes and Jack Sparks to lead the pack. Coastal Marine II pro Matt Davis served as tournament director and other team members Dan Gies and Chris Morris weighed in with their catch. All three plan to be on hand to teach the parent/son Cub and Boy Scout teams at their May 7th Scout Fishing Tournament. Following the weigh-in for the Scout event will be the Rotary Club Perchfest cookout and a silent auction to benefit local charter captain Dick Czerwinski who was badly injured in a recent car accident.

If you attend the Perch Fry and Silent Auction for local charter captain Dick Czerwinski this Saturday night May 7th Coastal Marine II, you could leave with a new boat! In addition to all the other items still being donated by area businesses and concerned citizens, Coastal Marine II will add a new Aquasport 19’ boat to the auction. “It’s a very nice 190 Osprey center console powered by a 115 horsepower four-stroke Yamaha outboard and comes complete with a galvanized custom trailer,” explained Bill Van der Giessen. “We’ll even let the lucky bidder use our new launch ramp and take it for a spin that night if they want.” There will be a minimum bid on the boat package, but it will be several thousand dollars less than the sale price. “We’ve been receiving some generous donations from businesses all around town,” says veteran employee Betty Velliquette. “Charter captains are donating trip vouchers, restaurants have sent in gift certificates, just about any kind of business you can imagine and we’ll accept donations right up to the start of the event.” The Port Clinton Rotary Club has offered to operate the perch fry portion of the event which will kick off at 6pm. Dick Czerwinski and wife Jan were involved in a serious automobile accident Wednesday February 9th. Dick was critically injured when their van Jan collided head on with another car on Route 53 near Fremont. Dick and Jan own the “Sassy Sal” head boat that docks in downtown Port Clinton. Dick is out of the hospital now and recuperating in a nursing home locally but will be unable to work this season except perhaps to help out at the office or hopefully lending a hand on the boats.
